Herbs That Support Your Adrenal Glands




Statistics show that 53% of adults report feeling frequently stressed at work or home. This chronic stress takes a toll on our whole body, taxing the nervous system, endocrine system, depleting cortisol (the main stress hormone our adrenals secrete) but for the sake of this post we’ll focus on the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands have an important job. They are responsible for producing and secreting certain hormones in the body.

A constant level stress triggering cortisol production leads to downstream problems.

Individuals experiencing dysfunction in their adrenal glands must look upstream because it’s a dysregulated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis at the root.


This can lead to symptoms such as:


  • Insulin resistance

  • Dizziness

  • Low imm-you-ne function

  • Low blood pressure

  • Weight gain

  • Various aches + pains

  • Thyroid dysfunction

  • Insomnia


Herbs have a powerful effect on nourishing our body and our adrenal glands by supporting them, restoring balance, and supporting our hormones.

A few great ones I’ll focus on include:

  • Holy Basil (Tulsi): Considered an adaptogenic herb it is high in antioxidants. Holy basil is know to help improve blood sugar levels, and positively affects the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis

  • Astragalus: Another powerful adaptogenic herb, astragalus helps the adrenal, imm-you-nity and digestion. It is best utilized if your adrenals stress is causing you to feel physically, emotionally and mentally exhausted.

  • Ginger: A remarkably versatile herb, ginger can increase energy and resilience to stress by strengthening the adrenals and modulating the levels of stress hormones.

  • Cordyceps: Cordyceps help the adrenals by supporting physical stamina, improving energy levels, imm-you-ne health, while also providing balance when inflammation is high.
