Have you heard of Camu Camu fruit? Also know as (Myrciaria dubia) it is a small orange-red fruit found growing on shrubs in the Amazon rainforest. This small fruit contains more vitamin C than any other food on the planet and is considered a superfood! Containing more than 60X more vitamin C than oranges and around 1,882 to 2,280 milligrams per 100 grams of fruit it’s easy to see why camu camu has such strong antioxidant properties. Vitamin C is vital for human health but yet humans, unlike other animals, cannot make it and must consume it from supplements or our diet. Synthetic C that is not nearly as beneficial or bioavailable as naturally occurring C. Therefore having a rich source like camu camu is a huge advantage.
But vitamin C is just one impressive component of camu camu. It also contains a fair amount of ellagic acid which is a phenolic compound with strong antioxidant activity working well to remove toxins from the body while also protecting against harmful molecules known as free radicals.
What I like most about camu camu is how bioavailable it is. Bioavailability refers to the ability of the body to absorb and utilize something. Camu camu powder is more bioavailable than liposomal vitamin C (which is already more bioavailable than ascorbic acid), but also is more readily absorbed into the bloodstream faster. This means our body is getting more and therefore able to utilize more!
As the body absorbs more it enhances immunity more. Benefits of camu camu include:
-Strengthens immunity
-Improves gut health
-Improves liver health
-Enhances detoxification
-Reduces mood swings
-Improves eyesight
-Improves cognition
-Fights of viral & bacterial infections
Camu camu can be added to smoothies, oats, muesli, yogurts, salad dressings and more. If you are looking to naturally increase your consumption of vitamin C consider adding camu camu. My favorite high quality brand is from Supreme Nutrition and can be purchased here
